Can I Watch TV on a PC Monitor?

Can I Watch TV on a Gaming Monitor?

can-i-watch-tv-on-computer-monitor

If the above has been the question on your mind, it means you don’t know much about computers, and it’s okay. You have nothing to worry about for there are many like you out there, and this article will help shed some light on the matter.

Can you watch TV on a gaming monitor? The answer is a definite yes.

It is a good idea for most people because, the picture quality is likely to be great due to the high resolution and refresh rate of the display. You can check out our selection of the best gaming monitors for console gamers here.

It is common for most people to use their HD TVs as monitors because the process is as simple as connecting the TV to a system unit or laptop. In addition, more often than not, all you need is a cable (e.g., HDMI) that is compatible with both the TV and either the system unit or laptop and you are good to go.

However, using a monitor as a TV is not as straight forward for most people. The reason is that you need more equipment than a single HDMI cable for the modification.

Moreover, most people may not be readily equipped with the extra gadgets that will facilitate the transition.

To add TV capabilities to your gaming monitor, you may need to invest in the following:

Where to Begin?

To determine whether you can use your particular monitor for watching TV, you need to inspect the display first to take note of its features.

Different monitors come with different ports and slots. These aspects of the display unit will determine how well it can do as a TV. You’ll want to take note of the display ports it has such as HDMI, DVI, VGA, SVGA or other. If there is HDMI in there, the chances are that you won’t have trouble with the TV capability modification.

Furthermore, you should not have any resolution problems because we are referring to a gaming monitor here, which often support insanely high resolutions and refresh rates. However, just in case you have some funny version of a gaming monitor, your monitor should support at least 720p to work with the modern day HD capable TV Tuner or Cable boxes.

What if my monitor doesn’t have HDMI ports?

It’s very unlikely for a gaming monitor, but just in case, you have something from another planet, that’s where the DVI/ VGA to HDMI converter comes in. If you have a different port than DVI or VGA, then get an adapter for that particular port.

Monitor to TV

The thing that will facilitate the TV addition, transition, or modification is the TV Tuner or Cable Box. These devices will give your monitor the capacity to tune in TV signals and let you enjoy your favorite TV programs.

Chromecast is another addition to this mix. With Chromecast or FireTV, you can stream Netflix or Hulu on your crisp, clear gaming monitor.

Please Don’t Stop the Music

Audio is something you can easily miss when adding TV capabilities to a monitor because most monitors don’t have inbuilt audio.

Luckily, your TV Tuner or Cable box may come with an audio port that will allow you to connect external speakers and enjoy your TV programs as usual. Otherwise, you’ll need to invest in an audio extractor, particularly if you’ll be using HDMI.

Using monitors for watching TV is an old practice in the PC world, for TV Tuner boxes (or TV Tuner cards) have been around for decades now. This is just one of those cases where what you don’t know won’t be of benefit to you, but now you know!

Is a monitor or TV better for console gaming?

Is a monitor or TV better for console gaming?

Playing video games is not the same as watching a movie or a television series, that is why many gamers ask themselves the eternal question: What is better to play on? A monitor or a television?

In this article, we are going to try to shed some light on this question.

Choosing which is the best console gaming monitors or TV is difficult. They both have their own advantages and disadvantages, depending on your budget. The place where we are going to locate it and the technology that is implemented in each of them, among other factors that can make balance from one side to another.

Monitor vs TV for video-games: what to buy and why

Both are a screen but do not offer the same technical features.

Both a television and a monitor can be connected to a video game console, or to a computer, if we want to use video games . But there are some technical differences that we should take into account when buying one or the other . In this way we will achieve the experience we seek, and spending as little money as possible.

The video game television

The television, as its name indicates, allows us to watch television . It is a good idea to have this feature, if the place where we are going to install the screen and the console is also where, albeit occasionally, we go to watch television.

But they are more limited devices in connectivity ; most of them only have HDMI connections , and although they have several audio / video inputs of this type, they usually have only one HDMI 2.0 , which is what we need for a 2160p resolution at 60 fps.

At the same time, although we take advantage of the HDMI 2.0 connection, we can not aspire to a higher framerate, which is one of the main disadvantages of a television that does not have DisplayPort. In a video game console we will not have problem, but if we are going to play with PC, we can go beyond 2160p 60 fps.

Why do televisions have no DisplayPort?

But there is an advantage in televisions – besides that they are for watching television, of course – and that is that they have a built-in sound system ; that is, speakers. Maybe you are going to use more helmets, or maybe you want to buy specific and independent speakers , but having integrated speakers is interesting, and it is also a second factor that makes them more expensive , another disadvantage that we can add to the list in this comparative monitor vs television.

Returning to that of the resolution and the framerate , most of the TVs are limited to 60 Hz , then the maximum framerate that we will reach is 60 fps for its refresh rate. It does not matter if you have an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti inside your computer, that the maximum number of images you will see per second will be 60. There are TVs that reach up to 120 Hz, but they are undoubtedly more expensive than a 120 Hz monitor;

In addition, monitors can reach far beyond this refresh rate.

How to use two screens with your PC in Windows 10

But what if, besides playing, I want to see movies on this screen? So, maybe you should consider that there are more and more HDR televisions , and increasingly cheaper, while this technology is scarce in the market of monitors. And it’s not just about movies, because both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One – in some of their versions – support HDR for some of their video games, in addition to 4K resolution .

Another important problem for a large number of televisions is the ‘over processed’ image . If we want a television to play , we should make sure it offers a PC mode or a game mode ; otherwise, the image signal is processed before it is displayed to ‘correct’ any type of imperfection, or give it a more HiFi look, and this introduces a significant delay , something we do not want when we are playing video games.

Monitors for Video Games

The monitor is a screen more focused on the computer. Hence, they are more complete devices in connectivity , with the DisplayPort connection as a feature more prominently extended. And this connection is the one that, as we mentioned earlier, will allow us to play content at 2160p above 60 fps , with a significantly higher image quality and, above all, greater fluidity. In video games, framerate is important, as we will now continue to explain, and having DisplayPort is almost essential.

Following this framerate, the refresh rate in monitors reaches higher figures . We have 60 Hz monitors, of course, and at ridiculous prices if we settle for Full HD resolution; but there is also a wide variety of models with 144 Hz , and even 240 Hz. We can get four times more images per second on one of these monitors than on a 60 Hz TV, something that completely changes the gaming experience if we look for the maximum quality and fluidity.

In a monitor, the response time is noticeably lower, and the input latency also because there is no such ‘processing’ of the image carried out by a television. For a lower price we can find monitors with better features in this section, and online games at a competitive level is something that drastically changes the experience. Much more still if we join the previous section, relating to the refresh rate of the screen, which will take advantage of all the power of our graphics card.

So, I buy a monitor or a television for video games?

It depends on your priorities, and how far you want to go with the video games, or you can for the hardware that you are going to use.

If yours is a video game console , check if it offers 4K HDR , and in this case you may be more interested in a TV – especially the HDR – and remember that although it is very likely that you are limited to 60 fps for the refresh rate from the screen, your console can only reach up to 2160p 60 fps maximum. And if you meet all this, get yourself a DisplayPort cable for your new TV, or you’ll stay at 30 fps maximum at this resolution.

In addition, you may also be more interested in a television for games if, as we said before, you want a television set and you are interested in integrated sound . And finally, it is also a point in favor of the television that the largest screens are only possible in this format, unless we are willing to sacrifice a kidney to afford our new screen for video games.

But if you want the best experience, buy a monitor .

Only with them you will be able to reach 240 Hz as a refresh rate, and squeeze your graphics card up to 240 fps . And only with them will you get the shortest possible response time , as well as the lowest entry latency .

Things that, as we said before, in a video game console are over because, due to hardware limitations, you simply will not be able to take advantage of it – the refresh rate, specifically.

The conclusion is to buy according to your needs and priorities. A television or a monitor can be better depending on your circumstances . In my case, I have gone with a computer monitor since I only game, watch Netflix and Amazon Video.

Benefits and Features of a Gaming Chair

Best Chairs for Gaming

As someone that sits at the computer often to play PC games, it might be in your interest to invest in one of the best gaming chairs.

While you might flinch at the price of gaming chairs, they can offer unique benefits and features that make it a worthwhile investment.

In this article, we will be going over some specific features and benefits that gaming chairs can offer and the reasons you might want to splurge and get yourself one for your gaming setup.

Features and Benefits of a Gaming Chair:

1. Better Back Support

Perhaps the most significant reason you want to consider investing in a gaming chair would be due to the ample support it can provide your back. Gaming chairs are well known for being extremely comfortable because they offer better lumbar support.

Just about any gaming chair that you will find on the marketplace will offer firm support in the lower back region to ensure that you are getting adequate support during long gaming sessions. Because of this, it can be a great addition for anyone that spends a lot of time at their desk.

Without a proper chair with adequate support, you might experience lower back pain due to maintaining improper posture while seated.

2. Reduced Fatigue

Another good feature that comes with a lot of gaming chairs is the soft cushioning in the buttocks area. This alone will allow you to achieve a much more comfortable seated position while you are spending a good amount of time gaming.

This can reduce the fatigue that you experience while gaming.

While the results that you are able to get from this specific feature will certainly vary depending on the gaming chair you end up purchasing, you should be able to find gaming chairs that have excellent comfort that can help you extend playing sessions.

3. Built-In Sound System and Vibration

Another good feature that you can find with gaming chairs would be a built-in sound system that features vibration. This alone can increase the level of immersion that you are able to experience while you are seated and playing games.

If you are someone that values immersion while playing games, there is no better way to add immersion than to add vibration to your chair which can help you really feel like you are inside of the game.

Along with this, having the sound come directly from your gaming chair can help you avoid having a bunch of wires spread across the floor or getting in the way of your gaming sessions.

4. Better Adjustment Customisation

A majority of the gaming chairs that you will find on the marketplace have extreme levels of adjustment which will allow you to get into the perfect seated position regardless of how tall or big you are.

These adjustments include but are not limited to being able to adjust the back angle, armrest, headrest, seat height, and more. If you wanted to get the same type of feature in an office chair, you would be expected to pay at the higher end of the price range.

Whereas, this feature typically comes with even some of the mid-tier options that you will find with gaming chairs.

5. Aesthetics

Another significant reason a lot of people end up purchasing these chairs has to do with the style they offer.

Not only are a majority of the chairs you find on the market bucket style chairs which closely mimic what you would find in a race car, but they offer a very unique style that you simply cannot find with office chairs.

This can add a lot of uniqueness to a particular gaming setup.

You might even be able to find a gaming chair that features its own built-in RGB lighting which can be synced with your favourite games and other accessories.

Overall, a gaming chair is one of the best investments you can make for your gaming setup.

Not only do gaming chairs typically have an aesthetic appeal that makes them worthwhile, but they have a lot of features and benefits that can really help you enjoy your gaming sessions much more.

These chairs will be much more adjustable and comfortable to play in for long periods of time which you typically do as someone that plays games on your computer.

I figured I’d start this review with a console gaming monitor that’s a little easier on the budget, but still outshines last year’s models by a long shot.

Its resolution of 3840 x 2160 and 157 PPI are impressive enough, but even more than a crisp picture, this monitor’s great features separate it from the competition. Here are just a few of the wild things this monitor can do:

  • ASUS Eyecare – Reduces blue light emission and screen flicker so your eyes aren’t strained even by hours and hours of gaming.
  • GamePlus – Added features like timers and crosshairs to help you improve your gaming, as well as an FPS counter for the graphics-obsessed and pro game reviewers.
  • 1 MS response time

This monitor, with its 2 HDMI ports, works great with both the Xbox One S and the PS4. There are a few drawbacks, namely its stand only offering tilt adjustment, but all in all these screen packs in value.

Last but not least, the ASUS VP28UQG FreeSync has a maximum luminance of 350 cd/m2—meaning you can view a clear picture under virtually any conditions.

This offering from tech giant Samsung doesn’t just want to be a good console gaming monitor, but the Cadillac of console gaming monitors.

From its larger overall size to its inclusion of HDR features, which are still new to the market and haven’t appeared in even other high-end monitors yet, it wows console gamers the world over.

Even before you turn this monitor on, it looks like a work of art. From its aesthetically pleasing finish to the beautiful curvature of the screen, everything about it looks thoughtfully crafted.

Of course, once the screen comes to life, that sense of craftsmanship goes through the roof.

While the HDR support, which allows you to see a truly unprecedented level of detail and kicks the maximum brightness up to a peak of 600, is the device’s main feature, it does some other things well, too:

  • Dual Hinge Stand – allowing any directional adjustment you can think of: tilt, pivot, and height
  • Support for AMD FreeSync 2
  • 144Hz refresh rate – so you don’t miss a second of the action
  • Connectivity – 2 HDMI 2.0 ports and 2 USB 3.0 ports (one of which even offers charging!) in addition to the DisplayPort.

While researching and testing this product for review, I found it hard to notice any real flaws.

The high price tag, though, might be prohibitive for a lot of gamers out there.

That being said, as HDR technology becomes more common throughout the year, the price may drop—and you never know when you’ll be able to find a deep discount!

Whether you prefer sports video-games or first-person shooters with incredibly lifelike graphics or fantastical games with a more stylized graphical tone, the colour display makes a huge difference.

There’s a reason we don’t play console games in black and white, after all.

While the 32UD59-B 32” monitor from LG had already earned its place among the best console gaming monitors of 2018 with its sharp display and wide array of connectivity options, its colour palate sets it apart from even the highest-end competition.

Just like the standards required by the biggest film directors and studios, this monitor covers 95% of the colour space of DCI P3—meaning that your console games look just as lifelike as the movies!

Think about this in comparison to sRBG. With over 25% more colour, you may as well play in black and white if you’re sticking with sRBG.

The monitor also boasts an amazing black stabilizer effect which makes it easier to see in the dark in game worlds by increasing contrast and revealing a deeper and wider variety of extremely dark colours on the screen.

The response time of this console gaming monitor is also worth mentioning. While I tested it for this review, I didn’t experience lag once—and yes, I was playing the latest games on the highest settings.

One drawback I will note is that the stand included with this monitor only has height adjustment, and lacks pivot or tilt support.

However, it’s easy to get around this problem, because the monitor is extremely easy to mount.

All in all, this is a great monitor for virtually any PS4 Pro or Xbox One S gamer.

This entry into Dell’s well-respected UltraSharp series of monitors perfect for console gaming comes with some surprising features to make gaming even easier and more fun.

Its biggest feature, though, is its astonishing HDR10 feature.

The HDR10 works with the other fantastic display specs of this monitor to make gaming more beautiful and fluid than on any of last year’s models and even most of the UltraSharp’s toughest competition.

On top of that, this is one of the lowest priced monitors with HDR support.

While it’s still certainly not a budget option, its mid-range pricing makes true HDR much more accessible to the average gamer than it has ever been before—and all of this with no compromise in quality.

One of the other key features of this console gaming monitor is its anti-glare coating.

This is great not just for when the morning sun comes spilling through your window and lets you know you’ve been up to gaming all night again, but also for the long-term health of your eyes!

The only thing I worry about with this monitor is the long-term durability of its stand, which seems quite thin.

However, I didn’t run into any problems during my extensive testing process, and it’s also important to note that the stand is fully adjustable regarding height, pivot, and tilt.

Of course, the monitor is also mountable!

With its high clarity, HDR support, and comfortably mid-range price point, this monitor is a great choice for PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One S console gamers from the casual to the professional.

While this console gaming monitor from Samsung has many of the same key specs and features that put other monitors in the top class, it seeks to differentiate itself with a few features other monitors are currently lacking:

  • Eco Mode is consuming only 19 watts – making your gaming easier on the environment and your wallet.
  • Great grayscale display power – that makes shadows and highlights sharper, especially when combined with the screen’s brightness.
  • 1 MS response time – to avoid picture lag and stutter, along with FreeSync support.

On top of all that, the screen is housed in a minimal but aesthetically pleasing characteristic Samsung design, with a beautiful bevel to accent the screen and the classic Samsung single button approach to adjustments.

While the system is packed with features, it is also easy to operate.

Additionally, the monitor gives you a bit more control than many similar console gaming monitors do, such as the ability to automatically optimise settings based on players’ angle of view—or tweak those same settings to your heart’s content, to create the exact picture you want.

The monitor also has full tilt adjustment and boasts 2 HDMI ports, although it has to be said that only one of them is HDMI 2.0—which may be annoying for those of you who game on both a PS4 Pro and an Xbox One S.

Although it’s certainly not a budget choice, this monitor can be had for a significantly lower price than similar models from other brands and some other Samsung models in general.

That being said, it also doesn’t offer HDR support.

What Makes a Great Monitor for Console Gamers?

Two big trends are happening right now in console gaming. One has to do with the console gamers, and one has to do with technological advancement.

Both are coming together to create some of the best console gaming monitors.

However, all the new specs and tech advances can make picking the best possible console gaming monitor harder, too.

That’s why I’ve written up this buying guide—to help you find the best console gaming monitor that fits your budget, your console, and your needs and wants.

Before we dive into specific console monitors, let’s look at what’s driving change in the gaming world right now.

First, monitors, as opposed to televisions, have finally caught on with console gamers because of their supremely crisp displays and wider arrays of displayable colours.

Better contrast and more colours mean that a gamer’s experience playing on a monitor will be much more lifelike.

As monitors for console gaming have become more and more popular, the world’s biggest tech companies have taken notice—and started developing some truly next level products and technologies.

The increasing popularity and capability of these monitors have come together to make 2018 the year of the console gaming monitor—a change that will definitely be as big as, and might even be bigger than, the jump from the difficult and lower-quality component, composite, and s-video to HDMI back in the 2000s.

If you have or want an Xbox One S or PS4 Pro, the simple fact is that you’re not getting all you can out of your system. Here are some of the amazing features these systems support or will support in the first quarter of 2018:

  • 4K resolution – you’ve known it looks great for a while now, and it’ll look even better on a console gaming monitor.
  • 1440p – an option that’s a lot easier on the budget than 4K, but still blows last decade’s 1080p out of the water.
  • HDMI 2.0 – and even higher!

Now let’s look at some of the monitors that are set to shake up the whole gaming world in 2018—and might just change the way you game forever.

Wrapping Thing Up…

I hope these reviews have helped you find the perfect monitor for your needs and budget.

Any of these monitors would make a fine choice for any online gaming (or even offline co-op gaming) enthusiasts, but I hope there’s one on this list that stands out to you because it has all the features you want.

While every device has pros and cons, it’s easy to see that monitors overall are improving drastically already, and are set to continue improving.

Even in the rest of the first half of the year, there are several monitors slated for release that I’m excited about.

What is a Gaming Keyboard and Why Do PC Gamers Need One?

best-gaming-keyboard

What is the Best Keyboard for Gaming?

A gaming keyboard is a keyboard that was designed with the task of gaming in mind. A majority of keyboards are designed to provide an optimal typing experience.

A keyboard that was designed for gaming will typically have specific enhancements and changes to make it more suitable for gaming on.

In this article, we will be going over some of the differences that you might notice with a gaming keyboard and why you should invest in one as a PC gamer.

Differences In Gaming Keyboards

1. Different Switches

One of the main differences that you will notice with a keyboard that is built for typing and one that is built for gaming is the switch type.

With gaming keyboards, you are generally going to find a variety of switch options available to choose from. With a mechanical keyboard, each individual key has a switch and a spring.

Thus, they are capable of providing much more tactile feedback and they feature their own unique actuation point where the key is registered.

A regular keyboard meant for typing that is not mechanical will feature a membrane design which is not nearly as tactile or accurate. A gaming keyboard almost always features a mechanical keyboard design which means you don’t have to press down fully on each key in order to get the key to register.

This can lead to extremely fast reaction times when playing fast twitch games. The fastest switches are Cherry MX switches which are going to be great for those that play fast twitch shooters and games that require fast reactions, but they are typically very poor for traditional typing because you will likely make many more mistakes with it.

2. Macro Key Features

Another big difference that you will find with a gaming keyboard is the addition of macro features which allow you to bind and combine specific key presses to create an action. This is something that can be very beneficial for those that play games that require a lot of combination button presses.

3. Software

Another big thing gaming keyboards offer is the ability to customize the keyboard entirely.

A traditional typing keyboard is not going to come with its own software. Whereas, a gaming keyboard will come with its own customizable software that will allow you to change what each button is intended to do, control RGB lighting, and more.

Reasons To Get a Keyboard for Gaming

1. More Features

The main reason you are likely going to want to make the investment in a gaming keyboard would be to take full advantage of the features that you will be able to get along with it.

With a gaming keyboard, you will be able to effectively create macros that will allow you to perform in-game actions that you would normally have to press multiple buttons to accomplish.

Along with this, a lot of gaming keyboards feature their own media buttons which will allow you to control the volume of your game.

2. Better Reaction Time

Another reason to invest in a gaming keyboard would be to experience better performance. With a gaming keyboard, you will be able to get the specific switch type that you feel most comfortable with.

This alone will help you get more out of your gaming experience and get the best performance from your gaming sessions.

3. Customization

You will be able to customize the RGB lighting to improve the aesthetics of your PC setup and you will be able to customize the actions of each key in order to improve your gaming experience.

Overall, a gaming keyboard is one of the best tools that you can invest in when you are looking to get into PC gaming or take your PC gaming experience to the next level.

Here’s Why Chromebooks are Terrible for Gaming… (but there’s a new hope!)

gaming-on-a-chromebook

If you are thinking about getting yourself a Google Chromebook as a replacement option for your Windows or Mac laptop, you might want to consider it’s limitations.

While a Chromebook is certainly a viable option for most, if you are someone that regularly plays games on your laptop, you might be unwilling to deal with its deficiencies.

Below, we will be going over some of the reasons you can’t play video games natively on a Chromebook.

Reasons You Can’t Play Video Games Natively on a Chromebook

1. Lack of Compatibility

For one, there is a lack of compatibility with a lot of the games that you would want to play.

A majority of the games that are released and that have been released in the past are purely designed to run on Windows operating systems. Because of this, you will be unable to play these games.

In fact, a lot of the games that you will find won’t even play on Mac’s operating system either.

While more and more games are beginning to release compatible with Linux, you are generally confined to the Windows platform if you are looking to play games natively on your laptop.

2. Lack of Power

Another reason a Chromebook is incapable of playing video games directly on it would have to do with the lack of power associated with it.

The fact is, a Chromebook is made to be an affordable device. Also, it is made to run a light operating system designed around Google Chrome.

Because of this, the Chromebooks that you will find on the marketplace are not packed with a bunch of different high-end components which limits the amount of power that you will find in them.

As a result, you get an under-powered laptop in terms of gaming. Thus, you cannot run the games natively on the Chromebooks even if you were able to put Windows on them.

3. Steam Support

Another reason you are not going to be running any non-browser based video games on a Chromebook would be due to the lack of Steam client support.

While Steam is now supporting Linux and you could potentially run a Linux Distro on your Chromebook to get the Steam client, you won’t be doing it with ChromeOS.

But wait, there is hope…with Google Stadia

However, there is good news for those that are looking to get a Chromebook but who might not want to give up gaming on their laptops.

Google is releasing Google Stadia which is a cloud-based video game streaming service which promises to deliver up to 4K resolution gaming at 60 FPS with full HDR support with only a 35 Mbps connection and it can work with connections as low as 10Mbps at a limited resolution.

Because it is a cloud-based service, you will not need to run the games natively on your laptops in order to play them which means the best Chromebooks for Education and Gaming will become viable products to use to play games on in the near future.

While it is certainly not the same as playing them natively without the potential for input lag from the servers, it is better than nothing.

VPNs For Gamers: What You Need To Consider…

best-gaming-vpn

What is the Best VPN for Gaming?

If you are particularly serious about your internet security and safety, a VPN (Virtual Private Network) is essentially more than a necessity.

A VPN helps keep your online activity anonymous by first, disassociating any data leaving your computer with your IP address (allocating a different IP address), rerouting data traffic to another location, and most importantly, encrypting it.

That said, the VPN does more than mask your public IP address.

Many individuals and even businesses use VPNs for a variety of reasons, purposes, and needs.

Some VPNs are designed to have superior encryption levels hence more secure for very sensitive data, while others are best suited for torrenting and streaming needs.

There are also VPNs optimized for unblocking blocked parts of the internet based on the user’s location/region.

Gamers however have to make important considerations when choosing a VPN.

Adding a VPN to your network means you’ll have to sacrifice a small fraction of speed which also adds latency to the connection.

Performance and security are however some of the critical factors a gamer will have in mind when shopping for a VPN.

That said, we will look at some of the security and performance issues that a gamer will look into, and then outline some of the best-performing VPNs for gaming on the market today.

1. VPN Gaming Performance Considerations

A VPN will have some impact on your connection speeds and latency. For this reason, it is advisable to look into factors that will help minimize such impact resulting in better speeds. Studies, however, show that a VPN will result in between 5% and 20% reduction in connection speeds.

This however varies from one provider to the other. While 5% might be a small price to pay, more than 15% reduction in speeds is barely tolerable.

Choosing a server closer to your location might however help improve the VPNs performance and speeds. Server proximity won’t have a direct impact on the desired security for as long as you aren’t trying to obscure your geographic location completely.

A server located about 5000 miles away will yield slower speeds when compared to using a server 50 miles away.

Your location also matters a lot when choosing or using a VPN. You, therefore, need to decide whether you’ll be using service from one location or will still need it while travelling abroad.

Some of the best VPN services have servers in less than 20 countries, while others will have servers based all over the globe. If you tend to travel a lot, and still need the same security features while on the go, you might then want to invest in a VPN with servers almost everywhere.

If using the VPN on one location only, you can then choose one with servers closest to you.

VPN services aren’t created equal. The technology and implementation of the VPN service have a significant impact on its performance and overall speed. Some VPNs are known to have a reputation for better performance and speed.

Although servers may be at the same location, one VPN will perform better than the other.

If you are looking for improved performance in a VPN, you should then look for providers offering the fastest connectivity. Identify VPNs with servers closer to your home or where you plan to use the service.

2. VPN Security Considerations

A VPN has more advanced and better security features when compared to antivirus software or a simple firewall. Some VPNs have better security protocols and encryptions than others as well. Two key factors come in play when looking for stronger security: the VPN’s country of origin and encryption methods used.

You need to be well-versed with various encryption and security technology to understand the security jargon. We’ll try to make these as understandable for you as possible.

VPNs that use traditional or older encryption methods are, in theory, weaker than those that use modern encryption methods. Only a few VPNs, however, have the encryption technology needed to make your data more secure.

Privacy laws in various countries also do come into play where online security is concerned. Most VPN providers have to abide by the local government requirements to avoid getting shut down. These VPNs are forced to log user activity for about three months, which makes them less than ideal for anyone concerned about their security.

That said, most VPN providers are based overseas where privacy laws aren’t as strict. It would be advisable to know where your VPN service provider is based on your data security and privacy.

Additional Factors That Gamers Should Consider with a VPN

a. Ease of use and implementation: if you do most of your gaming at home and don’t need all the extra security features, going for a VPN with a user-friendly interface and setup would be a wise idea.

This however depends on your preferences and overall patience.

b. Customer support: customer support shouldn’t be a major concern and especially when using technological services. Nonetheless, you need to identify a provider who’ll be there when things turn out for the worst.

If in desperate need for help, the customer support should be able to help swiftly and on time. Most VPNs, however, provide 24/7 live chat support but with a dysfunctional phone support system.

Some companies will, however, have a customer service representative available to help all round the clock. Others have gone a step farther providing detailed tutorial guides and videos to help you resolve most issues that might arise when using their service.

c. Cost: the cost of a VPN subscription varies from one VPN to the other. For instance, some VPNs will charge approximately $12/month (billed monthly) and $6.50/month (if billed annually). Some will charge a flat rate per month without offering any discounts whatsoever. Newer VPN providers confident of their service however offer appealing price options for up to 2+ year subscriptions.

We, at ESO FAQ’s, consider the key factors when shopping for a gaming VPN to be: performance, ease of use, security, and cost.

What is a Gaming Mouse and How To Choose The Best Type for You?

What is the Best Mouse for Gaming?

If you are becoming serious about PC gaming, you might be considering a new gaming mouse.

However, you might think that your normal optical mouse is good enough.

Before you splash out on a Razer or SteelSeries, check out my reviews of the best gaming mice in 2020.

What is a Gaming Mouse?

As the name suggests, a gaming mouse is a special computer accessory that has been designed with PC gaming in mind.

These mice will vary depending on the manufacturer and what they are looking to offer. They are more sensitive than normal optical mice and will provide better reaction times. When you are playing a game with reaction-based actions, this is very important.

Gaming mice will often have additional buttons and features such as weight control. All of these features will enhance the gamers ability to react to their games and make it easier for them to navigate the game world.

Responsiveness of a Gaming Mouse

One of the reasons why PC gamers need to have a gaming mouse is the responsiveness. This is related to the CPI (or counts per inch) which is sometimes interchanged with the terms DPI or dots per inch. This is how often the mouse will read its relative position.

If a mouse has a higher DPI, it will read more per second and this results in more frequent updates to position.

As most PC games will rely on the movement of the mouse, it is important that the mouse location is as accurate as possible.

A lot of gaming mice will have the feature of switching between DPI settings to ensure that the correct setting is used for the game being played.

Extra Buttons

A lot of people do not realize how important the extra buttons are for PC gamers.

In addition to the normal left button, right button, and wheel, gaming mice will have 3 to 12 additional buttons on the side. These buttons can be mapped to particular functions which is vital for success in certain games.

When these buttons are mapped, certain actions will be easy to complete in the game. It also slows down reaction time as the non-mouse hand does not have to move from the WASD controls. Players are able to FPS weapons and cast MMORPG spells while still moving around.

Ergonomics

Anyone who has used a traditional optical mouse for prolonged periods of time will know that your hand starts to hurt.

When playing games for hours it is important that your hand fits the mouse correctly. Gaming mice have 3 common designs to improve the comfort and ergonomics.

The material used to build these mice are also different. They are generally made from a plastic that does not collect grease or cause the hand to perspire. This is important because grease and perspiration can cause the hand to slip at a crucial moment in the game.

The weight settings are another part of the ergonomics of these mice. Many will have adjustable weight to get the right feel and movement. In some games, a mouse that is too light can cause problems.

Guide: Choosing the Best Power Supplies (PSU) for PC Gaming?

what-are-the-best-power-supplies-for-computer-gamers

Best PSU for PC Gaming

While the power supply (PSU) for a PC is typically an afterthought, it is actually one of the more important components of a gaming build.

After all, it will supply the power to each and every one of your PC components.

As a result, you want to be sure to get yourself a solid power supply that will not only provide sufficient power to your specific components but also one that is not going to put your expensive CPU and graphics card at risk.

Having a power supply that is cheaply made and/or underpowered can really cause your PC to run inefficiently and it can even harm your components in certain instances.

Thus, you want to find one that is made up using the highest quality components to not only provide you with the best performance, but also the greatest efficiency.

Below, we will be going over some of the most important things to look for when you are shopping for a power supply for your PC gaming build.

Things to Look for When Shopping for a Gaming PSU:

1. Modular or Not

The first thing that you should decide on is whether or not you are willing to invest more money into your power supply (PSU) for increased flexibility with the cabling.

A modular power supply simply offers you the ability to change out the cords that you have plugged into your PSU at all times.

Therefore, you will be able to get rid of the excess cords that might not necessarily be needed for your specific build. As a result, it can be beneficial for better cable management.

Because it allows for better and more efficient cable management, it is likely to result in enhanced quality of airflow throughout your case which can have benefits of improving cooling for otherwise crammed cases.

2. Form Factor

Another important factor that you have to consider going into the selection process would be the form factor of the PSU. This is ultimately going to depend on what case you are using for your build. You want to identify a PSU that fits your case.

This is only really going to come into play if you are dealing with a mini-ITX build. For builds using the smallest cases, you are typically going to want to opt for an SFX (small form factor) designed PSU.

That way, you will be able to find a power supply that will allow you to have more room to operate within your small case and it can improve your airflow as a result of allowing for more room within the case.

3. Capacity and Efficiency Rating

The most important performance factors that you want to look for when you are shopping for a power supply are both the capacity and the efficiency rating.

It is important to consider both features when you are weighing your options because they are equally important. The capacity or wattage that the PSU advertises is important to understand because you need to find a PSU that is capable of providing enough power for your respective components.

Two of the most important components that you should factor into your build are the CPU and the GPU’s power requirements. There are some GPU’s that require a lot of power and some that might be much more efficient.

Typically, Nvidia GPUs are much more efficient than AMD GPUs. You should be looking to see what your power requirements are for both PC components and factor in everything else to find the wattage necessary.

However, you can’t simply look at the wattage advertised and be done with it. Instead, you need to factor in the efficiency rating along with it because a PSU that offers under an 80+ efficiency rating is unlikely to supply the kind of power you require unless you purchase a PSU with significant more wattage than you require.

Instead, you should give yourself some room in terms of wattage by buying one that supplies more energy but at least with an 80+ rating.

That way, you know that it is going to be able to reliably provide the power your build requires.

If you need a high quality and reliable PSU for a small form factor PC build, there is no better option on the market than the corsair SF750.

Not only does it offer 750 watts of power which makes it the strongest SFX style PSU you can find on the market, but it also offers great efficiency and modularity making it a great value.

The biggest downside is the cost. You will end up paying up significantly for this PSU due to it being a small form factor PSU along with a high wattage PSU.

However, if you have a powerful small form factor gaming PC with a GTX 1080 TI or more, it will be well worth investing in.

3. Best Budget PSU

If you are on a strict budget, your best option is likely to be the Bitfenix BF450G.

Not only does this PSU offer high efficiency for a low cost, but it also offers extremely quiet operation for those that value low noise operation and it offers some of the best build quality that you will find south of some of the more expensive PSUs on the market.

The biggest downside to this PSU is the fact that it is not fully modular and it maxes out at 450W. Therefore, it is primarily targeted for those with mid-tier gaming builds.

Choosing the right PSU doesn’t have to be too difficult. It is best to stick with a reliable PSU manufacturer that stands behind their products.

That way, you can take advantage of their warranty and customer support if you do happen to run into issues with it.

By choosing the right PSU in terms of power, efficiency, form factor, and build quality, you should be able to purchase a PSU and completely forget it’s there.

A good PSU is something that you truly rarely every notice because it means that it is doing it’s job properly.
